Horse Tail Preparation Tips (for whites/greys)

  • Preparation is the key. Make sure that you wash the tail leading up to the competition so you can keep on top of the dirt.
  • Staining is a problem. So it is a good idea to use a tail bag on your horse.
  • When washing the tail in the lead up to the event use a normal shampoo, such as Stable Aid Medicated Shampoo.
  • When washing the day before and the morning of the competition I use the “purple shampoo”. This helps to whiten and brighten the tail.
  • Be careful not to leave the shampoo on to long as it will turn the tail PURPLE which is not such a good look!!!!
  • If your horse wears a false tail make sure you keep that clean to.
  • Spraying some kind of Show sheen helps to aid a shine and make the tail easy to brush through thus avoiding pulling out lots of hair.
  • Another tip is baby powder. Putting it through the horse’s tail once dry can also help add extra brightness. Practice this at home first so when you trot down the center line in your dressage test the judge will not just see a cloud of white powder!!!
  • All the products that I use on my horses are available from all Horseland stores.
  • Last of all Good Luck.
